The Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) has appointed a "caretaker" director. He is Carrick Martin, a former senior academic at Macquarie University, which owns AGSM jointly with the University of New South Wales. The announcement in early January 2003 follows the sudden resignation of Michael Vitale. Considered one of Australia's premier business schools, AGSM is facing budgetary problems because of increasing competition and the gradual withdrawal of government funding. Academics have been agitating for a change at board level to reinvigorate the school.
