US numbers buoy local market.

Positive economic news out of the US boosted the Australian sharemarket on 3 January 2003. The S&P/ASX 200 ended the session 27.9 points higher at 3,055.5, a one per cent gain for the week. The All Ordinaries Index finished 29.5 points up at 3,025.7. Data released by the US Institute for Supply Management showed that manufacturing activity was up in December 2002. The news caused a sell-off of Australian bonds. The June bank bill futures contract settled at an implied yield of 4.75 per cent, a rise of 15 basis points. The Australian dollar was down slightly, changing hands at $US0.5625 in early European trading.
