Hotspots on trial.
Australasian Business Intelligence, January, 2003

Australian telco Singtel Optus has commenced trials of public wireless local area networks in Sydney. The so-called "hotspots" use the 802.11 wireless protocols to permit network, and hence Internet, access. The trials follows a wireless service launched by Singapore Telecommunications - the parent of Optus - in Singapore in September 2002. Rival telco Telstra has completed its acquisition of SkyNetGlobal for $A3.3m, which will give it instant access to hotspots in the Qantas Club lounges of airline Qantas Airways and Rydges Hotels.
