Oxford University, in association with the Ford Motor Company, is conducting metal-moulding research. A breakthrough technology, known as sprayform tool process, has been developed. It enables the fabrication of tools and dies in a sufficiently robust form to be manufactured more quickly and at less cost than with traditional methods. Molten metal is sprayed onto a ceramic mould producing a thick and dimensionally accurate metal shell. The process is especially suitable for the automotive industry, and an entity known as Novarc has been formed to commercialise the process.
