Stockmarket continues to attract Australians.

A new report shows that nearly half of Australia's adult population owns shares either directly or indirectly through a managed fund. The data suggests that most of the one million Australians who entered the sharemarket through the public float of such companies as Telstra, Qantas Airways, Suncorp-Metway and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia have not only stayed but increased their shareholdings. Stock ownership could rise further in the future, with an estimated one million former shareholders and two million Australians who have never held stocks interested in share investments. To tap into this group, the Australian Stock Exchange should try to ensure that more share floats are open to the general public....
