Seoul denies unfair aid given to chip makers.

Australasian Business Intelligence, February, 2003

Feb 06, 2003 (The Asian Wall Street Journal - ABIX via COMTEX)

The US Commerce Department may decide to impose a tariff on computer chips from South Korea. This is despite the fact that the South Korean Government has denied accusations by Micron Technology, a US firm, that it has provided subsidies to South Korean chip-makers Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor. The Commerce Department has been investigating Micron's complaints since late 2002. German firm, Infineon Technologies, made a similar complaint to the European Union in 2002. The Commerce Department is expected to make a provisional ruling on a possible tariff by April 2003.
