When Dawn Robertson was appointed to head Myer-Grace Bros in 2002, she entered a corporate battleground. The board of parent company, Coles Myer, was is disarray and a UBS Warburg report had recommended hiving off the unprofitable Australian department store chain. These plans have been put on hold at least until the end of 2003. Robertson says that turning around the performance of Myer Grace Bros is a long-term process. She doesn't expect the chain to have fully recovered until at least 2006. Robertson is using a grid system to revamp the stores, based on the socio-economic profiles of each store's customer base. She refuses to comment on how many stores may be closed.
