Australian flower exporters face a 20 per cent rise in air freight prices. The International Air Transport Association is considering a rule change that would make air freight rates more expensive for lightweight cargo such as flowers. Australian flower exporters have carved out a niche market in the northern hemisphere, exporting flowers during the northern winter, when local supplies are scarce. These are rushed to overseas markets in the cargo holds of passenger aircraft. Flower air freight rates have already increased by 20 to 30 per cent since 11 September 2001, industry sources say.
