Australia's finance community remains impressed by the strength and consistency of ANZ CEO John McFarlane. He was the banker of choice for most Australian investment bank heads who, impressed by ANZ's outstanding full-year results in 2002, maintain that his leadership underpins the bank's solid performance in a difficult year. Most agree that McFarlane's aim of improving performance and lowering risk via a niche specialist businesses strategy has paid off. According to McFarlane, the bank's excellent results must be attributed to a variety of factors.
