Stocks recover some lost ground.

Despite continued geopolitical uncertainty, the Australian sharemarket recovered slightly on 17 February 2003. The S&P/ASX 200 closed 26.9 points higher at 2,844.1, the largest one-day improvement in two months. The All Ordinaries ended 25.1 points higher at 2,829.5. Asia-Pacific markets also gained. At the same time, trading volumes in Australia were down at just $A1.4 billion. Credit Suisse First Boston, which is advising Burns Philp, converted 47.7 million Burns Philp preference shares into ordinary shares. Lend Lease and Aristocrat Leisure both improved. Most blue chip stocks rose, with the major exception being Coles Myer.
