Corporations and computer hackers are engaged in what amounts to a virus code arms race. As viruses become more complex, able to disguise themselves and spread to multiple systems, companies are having to spend serious time and money fighting the threat. According to International Data Corporation, $US155bn will be spent globally on computer security in 2006, up from $US66bn in 2001. As the percentage of the IT budget spent on security increases, so does inefficiency. What is needed is a way to bring perpetrators of hacking to justice. This may mean shedding some of the Internet's anonymity.
