Australian space computer is a "world first".

Australian scientists have helped develop a reconfigurable computer for use in space. The computer was developed at the Queensland University of Technology in conjunction with the Applied Physics Laboratory at John Hopkins University in the US. The computer uses Xilinx field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Used instead of the application-specific integrated circuits common to most satellites, the radiation-resistant FPGAs enable the satellite's programming to be changed via alterations to its software. The computer was used in the FedSat, which was launched from Japan in December 2002. FedSat was the first satellite to be built in Australia since 1970.
