Maternity leave: it's a reason to migrate.
Australasian Business Intelligence, March, 2003

A Canadian academic warns Australia will struggle to compete in the global jobs market if a paid maternity leave scheme is not introduced. Linda Duxbury, of the School of Business at Carleton University in Ottawa, said a likely labour shortage in Australia will be exacerbated by an exodus of qualified women seeking access to such schemes in other countries. In Canada parents receive up to 50 weeks of leave, paid by the Government at 55 per cent of average weekly earnings. That scheme may be extended to allow workers to care for aged parents. Duxbury said that companies must adopt family-friendly work practices to reduce stress levels, which have increased markedly since 1991.
