Intel has released its long-awaited Centrino processor. The product is based on an M-class Pentium processor, related Pentium chipsets and 802.11b wireless network functions, that are claimed to be optimised to work with the new technology. Features are extended battery life, a fair level of mobile performance, and thinner, lighter profiles than earlier notebook models. A sector benchmark suggests the Centrino-based PC can give up to five hours of battery life, compared with about four hours for a mobile Pentium III-based system and about three hours for a mobile Pentium 4 system. Further information is available from Intel on (02) 9937 5800.
