The New Zealand parliament is presently considering reforms to workplace health and safety. According to John Funnell, president and executive director of the Aviation Industry Association, if the changes are approved they will have a negative impact on aviation safety regimes. It is proposed that the Act cover the occupational health and safety of aircrew, which are presently not included. On the other hand they do have some protection under International Civil Aviation and Civil Aviation Authority rules. Funnell says this will result in two overlapping and competing systems.
