Ready-mixes sparkle while beer goes flat.

A report by Australian business analysts Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu says the Australian beer market has gone flat. In contrast, the wine market has become highly competitive and the ready-to-drink (RTD) market has greatly increased sales. In 1997 the RTD market comprised around 100,000 cases, but 21 million cases were sold in 2002. According to the report's author, account director Michael Corigliano, bottled wine was finding it difficult to compete with RTD, the latter being thought better value by the target 18-to-24-year-old market. An Adelaide liquor outlet owner said that many 18-year-olds were not "starting" on beer anymore, but with the RTDs, which tasted much like soft drinks.
