Friend or foe?

Linux is a free, open-source operating system. It is flexible and able to be used on nearly all computers. Linux was once used mostly by Internet companies. It has recently been adopted by Boeing, Lynch and Verizon. A Gartner report claims Linux is increasingly seen as an alternative to Windows and Unix. Art Olbert, of Linuxcare, says the rise of Linux will aid firms that support technological diversity but harm those such as Sun Microsystems and Microsoft, which promote their products over rival technology. Insiders think Linux could cause Sun's downfall. It seems likely to limit Microsoft's dominance.
