Business groups are lobbying the Australian Government to unfreeze the Export Market Development Grants. The Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ACCI) has warned that the funding cap will affect small exporters. An ACCI report found that the grants were more than a third of export income for small and medium-sized companies. Australian Business Limited GM Christine Gibbs-Stewart said that funding will have fallen 27 per cent by 2005-06 from the annual $A150 million in 1996-97. Australian Minister for Trade, Mark Vaile, said the Government would be targeting selected areas and funds, and could not increase the scheme due to Budget constraints.
