Air New Zealand acquired its first ATR in 1995. It has now acquired its 10th ATR 72-500, having taken delivery of the aircraft at a ceremony at ATR's headquarters in France. The ATR 72-500 is used on Air New Zealand's domestic routes, and is operated by its Mount Cook Airline subsidiary. Howard Jellie, Air New Zealand's vice-president of regional airlines, says that the ATR 72-500 is very economical and environmentally friendly. He says it had had a positive impact on Air New Zealand's financial results in 2002, and would help it meet increased demand on domestic routes.
