The Australian Human Rights Commission Legislation Bill 2003 has provoked criticism. The Bill proposes to limit the capacity of the Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) to intervene in court cases. It would require HREOC to first obtain permission from the Attorney-General's Department. Senator Brian Greig, the Australian Democrat's justice spokesperson, described the proposal as "political interference". He suggested the provisions are a response to HREOC's actions in cases involving the Government, such as those concerning the Tampa refugee incident.
