The global aviation industry is facing the toughest of times. It is coping with a massive passenger downturn, due to the fear of terrorism, the war in Iraq and the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). In Australia, Qantas has announced that there will be redundancies, due to the huge passenger downturn. Other airlines forced to cut jobs include British Airways, Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental Airlines and KLM. The outbreak of SARS came out of the blue and suddenly stopped a lot of people travelling, for fear of catching the deadly illness. One analyst believes that the global aviation industry is facing a prolonged slump, with competition heating up as airlines come and go.
