Intel's Centrino chip package permits people to access the Internet using wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi). The US chip maker aims for 100,000 public places to offer Wi-Fi by 2004. Analysts think the package will help Taiwan's Compal Electronics and Quanta Computer to survive difficult market conditions. They think Centrino will be adopted by large companies. Compal and Quanta make notebook computers for multinationals such as Dell Computer on contract. Computer groups may be able to raise their profits by selling notebooks incorporating Wi-Fi.
