Landmark treaty for online music.

A new model for the purchase of online music has been unveiled in the US. In late April 2003, a deal was cemented between Apple Computer and five global music companies - BMG, EMI, Sony Music, Universal and Warner Bros. The deal means that songs will be purchased online by individual track, leaving users to compile their own CDs. Apple has set up its own online music store at www.apple.com/music/store/ On this web site, users can buy from a selection of up to 200,000 song titles. US residents are still the only ones allowed to buy from the store. The model was welcomed by Stephen Peach, of the Australian Record Industry Association. He believes that the model will be rolled out to Australia, if it is successful.
