Telstra asks $1billion question - how to scale back its IT budget.

Australian telecommunications enterprise Telstra intends to significantly reduce its information technology (IT) budget. Reductions are being planned to meet an operating cost reduction target of almost $A1bn over a three-year period. Outsourcing in the IT area will be brought to an end as the program unfolds, which will affect companies such as accounting firm Deloitte and IT specialists IBM Corporation and EDS. The program will be led by chief financial officer David Moffat and his immediate next-in-line, chief information officer, Jeff Smith. IT costs could be reduced by 50 per cent over the 2003-05 period. Moffat has refused to speculate on the effect on employment levels of the cost-cutting program.
