Meta Group calculates that 40 per cent of all e-mail received by corporations is unsolicited, or spam. Internet services group Pacific Internet Australia reports that spam comprises 18 per cent of the messages it handles. Spam's cost and inconvenience has led to growing efforts to stifle it. Some US states have made spam illegal. Sean Howard, the founder of OzeMail, has started a spam prevention operation, charging customers $A33 per year. Australia's National Office for the Information Economy recommends the drafting of anti-spam laws.
