The Geelong Advertiser group has launched a bid for the competing "Geelong Independent" newspaper. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission ruled that the purchase would increase the market share of the Geelong Advertiser group but not lead to huge price increases. The bid is rumoured to be worth $A2 million. "Independent" director Terry Tayler said a merger would undermine the region's diversity of media. Geelong Advertiser group CEO, Colin Duck, has promised to revamp the "Independent" if the bid is approved. The "Independent" has annual turnover of $A4 million per year, return on sales before tax of two per cent, and has 16 per cent of Geelong's $A25 million newspaper market.
