Business leaders in New Zealand have criticised the New Zealand May 2003 Budget. The Budget is in surplus by $NZ3.8 billion ($A3.3 billion), however economic growth is predicted to slow to 2.2 per cent. The release of the Budget had little effect on financial markets. Analysts feel that a cut in interest rates will not benefit the economy and the Budget was criticised for failing to address future energy issues for New Zealand. Energy prices have been a problem for large energy users, such as Carter Holt Harvey. There is also pressure for the New Zealand government to improve transport infrastructure.
