EQ begins to edge out IQ as desirable quality in the boss.

The so-called emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) of Australian managers is becoming more important than their intelligence. This is the opinion of the head of human resources firm SACS, Andrew Marty. Large companies like ANZ Banking, the National Australia Bank and Telstra have begun to regard EQ highly as a means of selecting better employees, especially managers. Marty says EQ is one factor women can use to help them attain higher management roles than they have in the past, as they are perceived to be more savvy about emotions. Examples of women who have used their EQ to good effect include Christine Nixon, the Chief Commissioner of the Victoria Police, and Elizabeth Proust, MD of Esanda Finance.
