China is experiencing a rise in consumer prices. The government hopes that the trend will continue as it makes the threat of deflation less serious. The prices have been rising for the last four months. The National Bureau of Statistics announced on 16 May 2003 that they increased one per cent in April 2003, when compared with April 2002. The People's Bank of China's monetary policy committee changed its forecast for the rise in the consumer price index in 2003 from one per cent to two per cent.
