Even as losses from computer crime rise geometrically, Australian companies are doing little to protect themselves. The 2003 Australian Crime and Security Survey conducted by the Australian Computer Emergency Response Team (AusCERT) indicates that 42 of the 200 companies surveyed had experienced a computer attack during the past year. Financial fraud accounted for a loss of $A3.52m, ahead of laptop theft at $A2.25m, with viruses coming in third with $A2.23m in losses. Graham Ingram of AusCERT suggest the real losses are likely to be higher, as companies tend to underreport.
