The US economy seems to be strengthening. The Conference Board's index of leading indicators rose one per cent in May 2003. Ken Goldstein, an economist at the Conference Board, said that the indicator clearly shows that the economy is recovering although some negative factors are still present. According to Christopher Wiegand, an analyst at Salomon Smith Barney, demand is rising while the cost of capital is falling. Another indicator, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia's regional index of factory business conditions, climbed from negative 4.8 points in May 2003 to 4.0 points in June 2003.
