One.Tel represents one of the more notable Australian business collapses in recent years. Over $A2 billion in shareholder funds were lost as a result of the telecommunication company's demise. In his book "Rich Kids", media commentator Paul Barry puts forward a number of reasons why One.Tel went under, including a lack of proper office management and insufficient credit checking of potential customers. Many have queried why Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch, two of One.Tel's bigger investors, did not adopt more of a "hands on" approach to a company that needed experienced people in charge, rather than visionaries.
