Airline loyalty schemes are evolving into a de facto financial currency. Serious business travellers now have more options than the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. These include card loyalty schemes by the major banks, programs by major hotel chains, and frequent-flyer programs offered by foreign airlines. Carlson Marketing Group's Richard Batterley notes that new travellers will save points to redeem a gift, and then save toward a major trip, or something larger. FrequentFlyer.com.au principal Clifford Reichlein said the arrival of schemes by major banks was a turning point for the industry. Credit cards account for 60 per cent of all frequent flyer points earned.
