Auditor slams ATO over registry.

Australasian Business Intelligence, June, 2003

Jun 30, 2003 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX)

The Australian Auditor-General has criticised the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for some of its IT practices. These relate to the ATO's handling of the Australian Business Registry. The report from the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) highlighted problems in the development of public key infrastructure. It also found that there were substantial problems with data quality, and that the ATO was not providing adequate front-end checking of data submitted by applicants. The ANAO also criticised the ATO for switching off business rules that proved to be contradictory in an attempt to make the system work, saying that there were no processes in place to correct any affected records.
