Australians are already among the biggest users of short message service (SMS) in the world. According to figures from Jupiter Research, seven million Australians send an average of 44 SMS messages each month. Jupiter Research expects that Australians will be sending around nine billion SMS messages a year by 2008. Niki Scevak from Jupiter Research expects television networks to make greater use of SMS in their marketing campaigns, due to the introduction of premium rate SMS. Scevak says that premium rate SMS is like a 1900 number, in that it allows for the division of revenue between the telephone company and the company conducting the marketing campaign.
