In early June 2003, Melbourne Airport has won the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) "Eagle" award. Airline, Qantas, nominated the airport, which negotiated a five-year pricing deal on a "risk-sharing basis". Qantas is also thought to have been impressed with Melbourne Airport's management practices. According to IATA director general, Giovani Bisignani, Melbourne Airport, along with Athens International Airport and Singapore Airport, deserved recognition for controlling costs during the turmoil created by the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, the Iraqi war and the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic.
