Michael Cooper expects The Athlete's Foot to earn sales of around $A80 million in the year to June 2003, an increase of 12 per cent. Cooper, the MD of the Australasian leisure and sports shoe retailer, says that the company has tried to avoid getting caught up with the fads that regularly hit what is a $A1 billion sector, such as those for retro shoes in 2000-01 and skate shoes in 2002. The Athlete's Foot currently has 96 stores across Australia and New Zealand, with plans to open as many as 15 more in 2003-04. Around 15 of its stores are company-owned, with the remainder being franchised outlets.
