Rupert Murdoch has until 6 August 2003 to assure US viewers he will not increase DirecTV's charges. The deadline was put in a letter to News Corporation's lawyers by Kenneth Ferree, the head of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) media bureau. Similar letters, covering a total of 43 questions, were sent to lawyers for DirecTV's immediate parent, Hughes Electronics, and that company's overall controller, General Motors. The FCC and the US Justice Department must both endorse the $A10 billion purchase of DirectTV by News, before it is allowed to proceed.
