News websites get more hits, retail more misses.

Internet site ratings agency Hitwise reports Australians visited fewer retail and more news web sites in 2002-03. Among strong gainers in popularity were the web sites of search engine Google, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Qantas Airways and job board Seek. Co-founder of Hitwise, Adrian Giles, said consumers were using the Internet more in association with other media, as a form of cross-referencing. Tessa Court of Hitwise said overall Internet user market growth was minimal. She said Australian web sites were capturing a greater proportion of overall traffic, however.
