Australasian Business Intelligence, July, 2003

South African-based mining company, Impala Platinum Holdings, has made a takeover offer for another miner. Impala already owns 35.7 of Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Zimplat). Impala has acquired the stake owned by South Africa's ABSA Bank. Impala has offered $A4.08 a share for the remaining 49.5 per cent of the company. However, analysts feel that the offer is too low. The value of shares is felt to be closer to $A5. However, Zimplat's share price fell to $A4.03 on 1 July 2003. Impala refines the metal produced by Zimplat and could fund further exploration of its resources.
