Unemployment benefits fail to meet basic needs.

Research by Paul Henman, of Macquarie University, will be presented at the Australian Social Policy Conference in July 2003. Henman's research has found that the unemployment benefit does not meet the cost of living, especially for single, unemployment men living in Sydney. According to the findings, the benefits received by single unemployed men covered only 72 per cent of basic living costs. In Sydney, this declined to only 63 per cent of living expenses. Henman has suggested that rationalised rent assistance in some cities may be beneficial.
