New chief can bet on TAB spat.

Australasian Business Intelligence, July, 2003

Jul 30, 2003 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX)

A dispute is looming over the monopoly on betting in Australia. The state totalizator agency boards (TABs) hold exclusive rights over betting. Their monopoly is being challenged by Betfair, a UK betting exchange. Betfair already reaches Australia via a web site. However, it wants to set up an operation in Australia. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) will have to examine the issue. The TABs want exclusive rights to wagering in Australia. This is anti-competitive. The ACCC will have to consider what is best for the consumer.
