Companies' incentive programs for staff are usually awards, merchandise and travel. According to Richard Batterley of the Carlson Marketing Group, rewards from incentive programs can range from emotional "recognition" awards to rational cash bonuses. Travel and merchandise also figure in this. While cash awards are spent quickly, the value of a presentation of a pen may last for years. A company has to think carefully about its target audience before handing out awards. While younger workers prefer gadgets such as CD players and audio systems, mature female workers may opt for lifestyle merchandise.
