Heritage list gets revamp.

On 21 August 2003, the Australian Senate passed the Environment and Heritage Legislation Amendment Bill. The Bill enables the establishment of two new heritage lists, the National Heritage and Commonwealth Heritage registers, to replace the National Estate. The Australian Government said that the new Bill will allow the Commonwealth to veto state government or private development where it threatens listed sites. The new heritage system has also introduced a new penalty regime, with prison terms of up to seven years and $A5.5m in fines for people caught damaging heritage sites. However, the Australian Labor Party and the Australian Greens have argued that thousands of sites will be left off the new lists....
