Unions have referred Qantas' proposal to test its staff for drugs to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission. The 10 unions claimed the tests would violate staff privacy. Stop-work meetings were held in protest. The court suggested the airline only test non-unionised staff. The secretary of the Australian Workers Union, Bill Shorten, says drug testing would force the few people with substance abuse problems underground. Peter Hendy, the CEO of the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, says employers cannot be held liable for industrial health and yet denied the means to satisfy their responsibilities.
