$1m GST fraud charge.

Maxwell John Reid, a businessman based in South Australia's Coober Pedy, has been charged with taxation fraud. The charges involve close to $A1m in fraudulently claimed goods and services tax (GST) refunds. Reid had been banned in 1992 by the Federal Court from running a company, but an Australian Taxation Office investigation found he was actively involved in the two companies charged, Gemstone Exploration and Gem Mining Victoria. Also accused are his wife, Edna Reid, and business partner, Graham Dasborough. He had also been investigated by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission over another string of companies in 2002.
