EU move will close down food name rights.
Australasian Business Intelligence, August, 2003
Aug 04, 2003 (Food Industry Week (NZ) - ABIX via COMTEX)
A contentious food and beverage proposal will be put forward at the Mexico World Trade Organization meeting. The European Union (EU) is continuing to seek protection for the names of foods with "specific geographical histories and associations". The names include "Chablis" and "prosciutto di Parma". A draft proposal from the European Commission is yet to be signed by the 15 EU members. Countries such as the US and Japan contend that many products for which protection is sought have been produced by European immigrants in other areas of the world for generations.
