The spread of broadband connections to Australian small businesses will create opportunities in application service provision (ASP). By providing services such as accounting software via an Internet connection, capital and associated maintenance costs are converted into service costs. Companies such as Salesforce.com are using this model, and others such as Oracle are experimenting with it. Accounting software company MYOB is pushing into this market, offering invoicing and payment services. It seems likely to continue to expand on these offerings during August 2003, offering links to entities such as the Australian Taxation Office.
