Innovation is the key to success in Australian business. In terms of human resources (HR), forward-thinking companies such as Shell, IBM and 3M have been implementing wide-ranging reforms designed to broaden the decision-making base and encourage employees to formulate ideas. HR managers would do well to consider innovation strategies, particularly in an era of increased accountability. Although innovation is often limited to product initiatives, Macquarie University's Dr Ben Searle advises that process innovation can be usefully undertaken by employees at all levels.
