Indian scientists have been working on a new herbal conceptive pill, based on a 2500-year-old medical text. The new ayurveda pill uses two key ingredients, false pepper and long pepper, which are both found in the foothills of the Himalayas. The new drug is understood to restrict ovulation, although it is yet to undergo clinical testing on human subjects. An Oxford University Medical School senior clinical lecturer has described research on the new non-toxic contraceptive as very important and work that "merits close attention". It is also believed that scientists have plans to trial the effects of the Chinese hibiscus, which is found in southern India, for its contraceptive properties.
